Our planet is burning. In the last months, images of the Australian ecosystem in flames shocked the whole world but what happened to Australia’s forests is just the tip of the iceberg that is almost melting. If we don’t act now, we’ll drown in a sea of plastic. In a world full of problems, this is an opportunity to be united and work towards the same goal. Nobody can live without his lungs. According to thousands of scientists, in fact, we are less than twelve years away from the possibility of undoing our mistakes — that why I’ve interviewed the Australian branch of Fridays for Future, a group of young environmental activists led by Greta Thunberg, to understand what we should do to reverse the global warming.

After what happened in Amazon and now in Australia, how far are we from the point of no return?

I think that our window of opportunity is closing. We must act now before it closes definitively.

Do you believe that world leaders are doing enough to change things and save the planet?

No, world leaders have failed us, and they have been failing us for some time. They are driven by money, profit, and dreams of eternal economic growth, not by the people. But we’re waking up, and change is on the horizon, whether they like it or not.

The images from Australia shocked the world, do you believe that what has happened could have reawakened consciences pushing people to support the cause?

In Australia, people have been shaken up with the houses destroyed, love ones lost, and they’ve seen the devastation in our wildlife, environment, and communities. They have changed their opinion on climate change because they saw what it was and it scared them.

What are the necessary steps to reverse global warming?

We need to spend tremendous amounts of money on renewables, and We need to shut down all coal-fired power plants. We will also need to get rid of the combustion engine and transition to electric cars, and then we need to invest in carbon capture technologies, to suck the carbon out of the air. All because we didn’t act soon enough.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future of the planet?

I’m optimistic. Before the school strike movement, I wasn’t. But we’re witnessing the beginning of change. We are living the beginning of the awakening, and every day, more people see the real truth.
